Acoustic versus Electric Guitars

Electric guitars are easier to play because of their narrow body and lower tension on the strings.

Electric guitars are often used as carrots on a stick for young guitar students. Let’s compare acoustic steel string and electric guitars.

Acoustic guitars come in two categories: nylon (classical) and steel string. Nylon strings are the easier to press to the frets with the left hand. Steel strings have a brighter tone and more volume. Acoustic guitars can amplify themselves via the soundboard, but also come in acoustic-electric models which have pickups that let the guitar connect to an amplifier or sound system.

Electric guitars are easier to play because of their narrow body and lower tension on the strings. While the electric can be played “around the house” without an amp, it’s more satisfying (and accurate) to have at least a small amp (10 Watts and up).
